How to Pick Your First Training Split
6 min read · updated 1 Sept 2026
Start from your calendar, not the split
The best split is the one you can repeat every week. Count the days you can realistically train, then pick the structure that covers each muscle group at least twice inside those days.
Two or three days a week points at full body. Four days fits upper/lower. Five or six days is where push/pull/legs starts to make sense.
Frequency beats session length
Two shorter sessions that hit a muscle group twice will usually beat one long session that hits it once. Spreading the same weekly volume across more days keeps quality high and soreness manageable.
Change the split only when it stops fitting
A split is a scheduling tool. Swap it when your availability changes, not because progress slowed — that is usually a volume, intensity or recovery problem instead.
